Establish the Cost Basis of your Old Investments
Stock Search International Inc. can provide historical stock
market quotes to establish the cost basis of your investments for tax purposes.
Our method of valuation is in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the
Internal Revenue Code. If you lost the original purchase receipt indicating the
price you paid for your shares, this service will allow you to adjust your
income tax return as follows:
Declare a Loss of
Capital. According to the IRS, a loss of capital can be
declared in the year in which you sell an investment for less than its original
purchase price. You can also take a tax deduction in the tax year your
securities become completely worthless. However, if you have now learned that
the securities became worthless in a prior tax year for which you have already
filed an IRS tax return, you can still file a "tax refund claim" (IRS tax Form
1040X) up to seven (7) years after your investment was officially declared
void.
Reduce Capital
Gains. If you sell an investment which has prospered, the IRS
says that the difference between the amount you received and your original cost
is considered as a capital gain. Knowing your cost basis is thus essential if
you want to minimize your taxes.
Estate
Settlement. If you are the executor of an estate involving
stock certificates, the IRS requires a value of the portfolio at the time of
death. If the companies are still operating under the same name, a quote will
suffice. However, if they have disappeared from the stock exchanges, research
will be required first to establish their identity and status on the date in
question. To access our Database of Companies no Longer
Listed, click here.
